This page will cover the answers to questions about the running of the society given the Coronavirus situation and the restrictions in place from the University and EUSA. This is all very new for us, but we’re trying our best to accommodate the situation. If you have a non-Corona-specific question, check the other FAQs. And if you can’t find an answer to a question you have, don’t worry! You can contact us by email, Facebook or Twitter!
When and where is Series Night?
Series Night will take place every Thursday, from 7:00pm to 9:30pm. We’ll normally start the shows as close to 7:00pm as possible, so make sure you’re on time if you don’t want to miss anything! Series Nights this semester (September 2020) will be held online via Microsoft Teams.
What is the format of Series Night?
Likely a few days before, an email will be sent out with details of the Teams meeting and a link on Facebook will be published. Between 7:00pm and 9:30pm we all join the meeting on Microsoft Teams and watch the shows. After this, we’ll probably hang around on the meeting for a while afterwards to chat and hang out.
What are you watching this semester?
- Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
- Gravity Falls
I’m not a big fan of one of the series you’re watching. What can I do?
We usually watch the series in the same order every week. So if we watch the series you don’t like at the start, then you can just show up late! Otherwise, feel free to log off and do your own thing while the show you don’t like is on and then pop back in when a new show is starting.
I missed a week of Series Night and now I’m behind on the shows! What can I do?
All the shows we’ll be watching this semester are available on Netflix, Amazon Prime or Disney+, barring Galavant (which is not available anywhere in Europe for some reason) which our Treasurer has kindly supplied the DVD for us from the USA.
Every week, I’ll try to make a post in the “News” section of the website detailing which episodes we watched. I’ll also provide a summary of the episode, so you can either rely on my summary (with likely terrible commentary) or just take note of the episode number and watch it in your own time!
When will Series Night take place in person again?
We don’t know yet. Rest assured, we’re as eager to get back to our normal scheduling as soon as possible, but we have to make sure we’re safe as we do so. We’re keeping up to date with EUSA’s guidelines. We’ll let everyone know through the usual channels (Facebook and email) when we can resume as normal.
When and where is film night?
Film night will be held online this semester, again on Microsoft Teams. Film night is every second Saturday. It starts at 7pm and usually goes on until around 11pm-midnight. The first Film Night of this semester is on Saturday 26th September.
If film night is cancelled, a post will be made on our Facebook page and an email will be sent out. We’ll also make a post/send out an email when Film Night is over for the semester, or if we can switch to in-person gatherings.
What is Games Night?
Similar to Film Night, Games Night is every other Saturday. These will take place on our Discord (email the committee if you would like the invite link!). We’ll likely play a lot of Jackbox and other online board games we can find. Likewise, if any changes happen to the way we’ll be running it, we’ll let you know.
Has the membership fee changed?
No, it’s still £3 for students and £6 for non-students. We felt that the fee was appropriate regardless of the situation. Membership lasts for the whole year, so even if you can’t take advantage of in-person events and the library this semester, we’re hopeful that second semester will provide plenty of opportunities.
When do I have to pay?
You can come along for a week or two to try out the society before paying your membership fee if you like (as long as you pay at some point)! Membership can be bought at any time from our EUSA page. It will obviously probably be a while until we can accept in-person payments.
Will I be able to visit the Library?
The library won’t be functioning at the start of the semester, but we’re keeping an eye on the situation and let you know when you can take things out again.
What emails will I receive if I’m on your mailing list? I don’t want spam!
We’ll send out emails at the beginning of the semester with details of shows etc. and at the end of the semester to let you know when the last meetings are. During the semester, we’ll send emails with links to the Series/Film/Games Night meetings so no one misses out, and any changes to our Nights (such as being able to meet in person again).
I’m on your mailing list but I don’t want to be/I’m not on your mailing list and I’d like to be. How do I resolve this?
If you regularly attend Sciffy events then you can let us know there if you’d like to be added to/removed from the mailing list. If not, then you can email the committee (firstname.lastname@example.org) and let us know that way. We clear the mailing list at the start of every year to try and prevent anyone from receiving unwanted Sciffy emails.
